Band Camp
Band camp is a weeklong event that occurs just before the start of the school year and is traditionally held at the Pima County Fairgrounds. Parents, family members, and volunteers are invited to come out for any part of this event. For each day of Band Camp, students must be present at Sabino at 8am and will be taken by bus to and from the fairgrounds. Sorry, no personal transportation is allowed. A catering company will be present to provide lunch and dinner to students at an extra cost, but students may choose to provide their own lunch and dinner. On the final evening of Band Camp, parents and family members are invited to come out to the Fairgrounds for an introduction to the staff and to see/hear a demonstration of what the marching band has been working on during Band Camp.
Band Practices
Band practices are generally held on Monday and Thursday evenings from 6:00 to 9:00 pm on the Sabino Football field. Parents are welcome to attend.
Sectionals
Once the marching band season begins, sectional practices are also held each week. This involves only the section that your instrument is assigned to. Sectionals typically last for 1 – 2 hours.
Football Games
Naturally, the marching band performs at all of Sabino’s varsity football games. At home games, the band performs during the half-time show. At away games, the band performs the pre-game show.
Competitions and Festivals
There are several marching band competitions that the marching band attends each year. Some are local, and some are out of town. More information will be provided on this as details become clearer.
Grades/Tutoring
The instrumental department recognizes the importance of achieving and maintaining good grades in all of your classes. In addition, good grades are also necessary in order for a student to remain eligible to participate in marching band competitions. Parents, teachers and volunteers are on hand for the first hour of the Monday night practices to tutor any musical student who might want to improve their grades.
Phone Tree
The phone tree is a free, courtesy service offered to all families of freshman students. When the marching band is returning from a band competition or an away football game, a network of Sabino parent volunteers who are in contact with the bus drivers will call your home 15 minutes before the students arrive back at Sabino so you'll know when to come and pick them up. This helps to eliminate long waits in the school parking lot.
Fees
Fees for the band season are determined by the start of the school year. Those fees cover costs for uniforms, music, bus, meals and competition entrance fees. Fees may be paid all at once, or in payment form. See the SIMBA treasurer for details.
Scholarships
Scholarships are available to Sabino Instrumental students to help offset the cost of Instrumental dept fees. See the information section of this website for more details.Volunteering
We have plenty of volunteering opportunities for parents and family members to become involved and help out throughout the school year. The length of the tasks can range from a minimum of 15 minutes to several hours, depending on how you'd like to help and how much of your time you can share with us. See the volunteer page for more information.
